Mystery 327 next gen

New improved problems

Here's a pix of the old balancer
notice the paint line... this is 1" from the end of the paint line to the front of the balancer.

So one would assume the harmonic balancer would sit foward a bit.

So today we were going great guns

But I took a smoke break and noticed that the new fluid dampener was sitting a little to far foward ( at least for what I was used to).

And I did buy the 25.00 cool tool to press ( or push) the harmonic on the shaft. and it does feel home!

So better safe than sorry

I took the bolt off and measured

The OLD one was 1" of gap
the new one is an 1 1/4.....

And I now looked at the bolt

Not the amount threads one would think....

So now I'm confused.....

1/4 of an inch isn't much but I'd better fix it now as opposed to later.

In addition today we got the.....
Fuel pump & shaft in
Oil pan
Drilled out the heads so the push rods had lot's of clearance.

Timing cover

Now the harmonic balancer is giving me grief

So what do you all think?

Vig!

OH NOOOOO!

So I went back outside to take a pix of the cool tool

And bolted the old water pump

and the pully back up.

1) the threads in the NEW harmonic balancer were buggered up!

2) the picture sez it all

Arrrrrgh!

It no fitty!

View from the top!

The end

I must be hitting the front of the woodruff key for the timing bottom gear... which would be about 1/4 of an inch so I'm now really boned!

Off comes the oil pan!
New timing cover gasket.
3 hours to r&r everything

)(*^%#@)&#@**^&@($&@)#&@(#& ER!

Not a happy man....

and to add insult to injury....

As I'm cleaning up the valve covers do not fit!

Like the engine is doing the Naaay Naaay dance at me ( with razberries thrown in to boot!)...

Oh well
Back to the drawing board!

You're NOT alone

I had the same problem with my harmonica:crazy but get this Vig..I have NO threads in the end of my crank:hb no tool, no nuttin honey:L I ended up spacing my pulley and the alternator to line up. Good thing I only got one fan belt eh?:(

DONT GET MAD ..DO THE MATH

So I hate a mystery!

I made a scribe on the harmonic sleeve ( light one) and pulled her out ( AGAIN )

So check this out...PHEW!

I did the math and lo & behold I did it right and the water pump is WRONG!

Now I gotta get MORE STUFF!

I needed a new pump anyway......

Solve 1 problem get 3 more... I LOVE VETTES!

TADA

Vig!

NO THREADS????!!!!!!!

how do it stay on?

now really confused~

Vig!

Chew

Ever hear of Bazooka bubble gum? Just a real tight fit.:confused

Rowdy

I can't believe that...... how did you get it on? ( the balancer I mean ) beat it into submission?

With the cool tool it took a fair amount of force but not abby-normal!

So does the offset I have look right measured against your car?

So next items on the to do list,

New valve covers.
New water pump & pulley.
Finish paint.
Motor mounts.
Final bolt flex plate.
Get / find the tangs to lift the engine.
Intake & plumbing.
Set carb.
Bolt up starter.
Install oil filter adaptor.
Get oil pump prime tool.
Get HEI distrib.
Wires & looms.
Plugs.
Dipstick.

I'm going to have a fair amount of parts for sale/swap soon.

Orig 461 heads castings.
3 sets of valve covers. ( stock tin, aluminum 73 ish & the Ricky Racer Mickey Thompson's)
Orig cam, lifters, push rods, timing chain stock rockers.
Stock Oil pump.
Edlebrock intake (TM-1).
Stock Harmonic balancer.
Stock timing cover ( no timing pointer )

Oh where or where could my 65 be.....

Vig!

Those heads have no holes to bolt on an A/C right? I think you mentioned that.

What about that intake, is it the "performer"?

I am interested

Frank

It's an eldebrock

TM-1 ( OLDER STYLE ) early predacessor to a preformer.

It's ROUGH and designed for a 327...not a 350!

It's painted silver ( and some blue ) needs to be stripped.

( oil fill hole in front) NO EGR, and it has the studs set for a carter carb with a riser.

I can take CLOSER pix..if it's what you want...

Vig!

Heads

They are BOTH raw 461 heads w the standard press in studs.

One of the heads had a crack which I had nickle welded & pressure tested.
The other one is perfect!

They have been decked ( clean up cut )
New seats 2.02/1.60
Stock IRON guides ( reamed )
I have the stock springs, hats and NEW PAW keepers
I do have the Valves... but I wouldnt use em (Old & funky)

No porting done or any other trick stuff.

There are NO acc holes for A/C and do not attempt to add them
(casting to thin)

They have been hot tanked and I sprayed WD-40 all over em to keep em clean.. back in the machine shops bag.

The machine shop glued some pop up thing on the heads for warranty purposes which I can remove if you like.

And I could do the drilled stud thing if you like ( more ).

I would be up for trades for these parts... as opposed to cash.

But they are all AS-IS... no warranty... it's yours...

( I got burned last year on an engine deal... the kid fired a motor up with no oil in it and blamed ME... parents made a BIG STINK.. and we went to court.. they LOST! but cost me a BUNCH of time & aggravation)

So that being said... I am honest to a fault about what I'm offering but once the deals done...that's it!

Vig!

Brute Force

I used a soft piece of wood and a BIG HAMMER:bang

additional info for the record

The harmonic is 6.25 inches in diameter just like the stock one...but is Muy Macho!

So Rowdy... Buddy
Can you take a gander under YOUR hood and get a measurement ( by sticking a pencil in the front hole ) and seeing the dimension between the nose of the crank and the front of the pulley.. I assume you have a single pulley...not a dual!

Vig!

Sure Will

Right after work, I'll come up with a measurement for ya'.;)

I'm Seeing...

About 2 1/2 inches. When I "first" installed my new balancer, it didn't look right or measure right, so I removed it and it was exactly the same depth as the stock one. So, on it went but still didn't line up with the water pump or the generator. SOOOoooo..., I kept hunting around until I got close for the pulley, put a flat washer behind each of the three bolt holes and mounted an alternator. Pulls 8000 RPM and the belt stays on:cool
